Somehow its Hollywood Awards season again already… and am I the only one who doesn’t feel like he’s actually seen an Oscar Winning MovieTM yet this year???

Oh, and for my fellow Australians, a quick reminder:

In the parlance of our national media, Guy Pearce didn’t lose today at the Golden Globes. Australians never lose. Aussies are always ‘snubbed’, apparently.

It’s the antithesis of more than 1 Australian winning an award in any given year, where we’re told that Australians are ‘taking over Hollywood’.

Which makes Hollywood the France of global business industries, I guess.

Call me a glutton for punishment when it come to rallying at the absurdity of the human condition, but I can’t help but follow shit like the GOP nomination process, which is currently underway in the U.S. 

In fact, if I were more dedicated to this blog, politicians like Mitt Romney, Michelle Bachmann and Newt Gingrich could probably provide me with enough material to post every day from now until the end of time.

Of particular interest was seeing the one-time frontrunner to run as the Republican candidate, Herman Cain, dropping out of the race this week.

Cain, who presumably learned everything he needed to know to be President of the United States whilst acting as the CEO of Godfathers Pizza, was dogged recently by numerous allegations of sexual misconduct and impropriety. One woman, a ‘Ginger White’, claimed she had a 13 year affair with Cain, a liaison that only ended shortly before Herman decided to run for President.

Easily enough bullets to stop the Cain campaign in its tracks. It’s never a fantastic idea to put your faith in the discretion of a woman whose name sounds like either a) a stage name, b) a sitcom character, or c) a kind of upmarket cocaine.

However it also came to light this week that one of the main tenets of Cain’s well-rehearsed rallying speech across America looks like it was, ahem, ‘borrowed’ from an 11-year-old cartoon movie.

Prefacing his statement with “A poet once said”, Cain has spent the past few months repeating ad nauseam that “Life can be a challenge. Life can seem impossible. But it’s never easy when there’s so much on the line”.

Too bad that ‘poet’ was actually the songwriter for the animated film, ‘Pokemon 2000′:

Who says politics these days isn’t just a series of soundbites designed to grab the attention of the lowest common denominator???

No word as yet on whether Barack Obama is going to co-opt the lyrics to the theme from ‘Duck Tales’ for his own campaign.

Although when you think about it, life really IS like a hurricane innnnn Duck-Berg…

Not even poor... a DESTITUTE man's Howard Stern

I’ve watched with interest the past few days as the Australian media has once again eviscerated radio shock-DJ Kyle Sandilands for some shit he said that was (insert any combination of the following: offensive, appalling, disgusting, racist, sexist, misogynist, ignorant, foolish, ridiculous, feeble-minded, bone-headed, xenophobic, cruel or laughable).

The story goes something like this…

Kyle and his co-host/giggle-monkey Jackie O presented a variety show on Australian TV earlier in the week. Filmed in Sandilands home base of Los Angeles, it featured such celebrities as… umm… welllll…

Said show does a less than inspiring number ratings-wise, a fact that’s gleefully reported far and wide.

Kyle takes aim the following day at his critics, in particular at News Ltd journalist Alison Stephenson. Amongst his comments were gems like:

“This low thing, Alison Stephenson, deputy editor of news.com.au online. You’re supposed to be impartial, you little troll”

“You’re a bullshit artist, girl. You should be fired from your job. Your hair’s very ’90s. And your blouse. You haven’t got that much titty to be having that low cut a blouse. Watch your mouth or I’ll hunt you down”

Just 8 kinds of pleasant, huh?

Cue the media furore, and 423,796 news articles that all featured the words ‘Kyle’, ‘Vile’, and/or ‘Bile’.

And now we stand here in the aftermath, with sponsors of the ‘Kyle and Jackie O Show’ jumping ship left, right and centre. Kyle, as always, remains unrepentant. In his own mind apparently he’s a champion for the right to free speech… a right that’s American, NOT Australian incidentally, but whatever. Maybe he and Andrew Bolt can start some kind of club?

Comments sections on The Age.com.au and the HeraldSun.com.au are flooded. Head-shaking tut tut editorials are still being produced. Jackie O remains as useless as ever…

Funny how the composition of a photo can kinda mirror their relative contributions to the radio show, huh?

And through it all I can’t help but notice that one thing is being forgotten in all this.

The TV show. That sucked. That was an epic failure.

By simply acting like Kyle Sandilands, Kyle has managed to sweep under the rug a hugely detrimental strike against his foray into television. Yes, he’s behaved like a pig, but that’s all in service of his already established brand.  

Honest question – do you REALLY think that this is going to be bullet that finally puts this douchebag’s career down???

Sure, the general public think he’s a fat, ignorant, woman-hating bully… but how is that any different to what you thought of him last week? Last month? Or 2 years ago, after he infamously asked a 14-year-old girl on air who revealed that she’d been raped several years previously “…is that the only experience you’ve had?”

King Kyle served up a turkey (on the eve of America’s Thanksgiving no less), and STILL managed to remain on the front page of newspapers all over the country for 2 or 3 solid days.

Let’s face facts:

Kyle Sandilands is an idiot. A complete frigging asshole. But THAT’S his brand. And all the Australian media’s poo-pooing this week accomplished was to strengthen that brand.

So who’s really the idiot here?
