Why a little religion in the wrong hands can be a tad dangerous

Check out this link to see American televangelist Pat Robertson on the Christian Broadcasting Network explain the cause of the devastating earthquake in Haiti overnight.

For those unable to watch the video, Robertson claims that the “true story” is that Haiti swore a pact to the devil to get free from the French (and “Napoleon III or whatever“), and ever since then they’ve been cursed.

THAT’S why tens of thousands of people are missing or dead. Does it all make sense now?

Here’s a quick rundown from Wikipedia on Robertson’s beliefs:

Controversies surrounding Robertson include his earlier work as a faith healer, his claim that some Protestant denominations harbor the spirit of the Antichrist, and his claims of having the power to deflect hurricanes through prayer; he has also denounced Hinduism as “demonic” and Islam as “Satanic.”

Robertson has issued multiple condemnations of feminism, homosexuality, abortion and liberal professors. Robertson also had financial ties to former presidents Charles Taylor (Liberia) and Mobutu Sese Seko (Zaire), both internationally denounced for their systemic human rights violations. Robertson was criticized worldwide for his call for Hugo Chavez’s assassination and for his remarks concerning Ariel Sharon’s health as an act of God.

Why are so many of these sanctimonious assholes ex-Southern Baptists who’ve broken away from the church because it just ain’t quite restrictive enough? Do people actually believe that Pat Robertson is spreading the word of God?

I can’t wait now for Fred Phelps’ take on this whole Haitian crisis. Probably that it’s really the fault of the fags and the Jews again. Now there’s a piece of work… try reading Fred’s bio some time.

I have friends who are devout Christians, and they’re fantastic people. The whole God thing works for them. And I understand that some people find solace in church and in their faith – it can provide them answers to a lot of complex questions we all face.

But the fact that a small group of right-wing extremists need someone like Pat Robertson to justify a natural disaster of epic proportions simply because ‘those savages deserved it’…

That you can reconcile that along with Christ’s messages of love and understanding scares me more than almost anything else I can think of.

If you can, spare a thought today for those effected by this horrible tragedy in Port au Prince.

And fuck you in the ass dry with a rusty dildo, Pat.
